The movie Casino (1995) ends with the collapse of the Mafia’s control over Las Vegas. This is due to Nicky Santoro’s (played by Joe Pesci) violent and reckless behavior. In addition, the FBI investigates Sam’s (played by Robert De Niro) operation.
KEY ELEMENTS OF THE ENDING.
The Fall Of Nicky Santoro.
Nicky not only becomes too high profile with the reckless killing, and unnecessary law enforcement attention. But he also sleeps with Ginger who is Sam’s wife (played by Sharon Stone) which is a big no no in the mafia. Moreover, he is also suspected of being behind the car bombing of Sam Rothstein. With him sleeping with Ginger, and him trying to kill Sam and everything else Nicky has done, the bosses were finally fed up with Nicky. As a result, they had him and his brother beaten to death in a midwestern cornfield.
Ace’s Fate
Sam “Ace” Rothstein survives the car bombing, but he loses everything else his wife, his casino, and his power. He returns to his roots as a sports handicapper in San Diego. In conclusion, while the mob’s era ended, he still makes money and says, “why mess up a good thing”.
The Corporate Takeover
The film highlights the shift from mob-run casinos to corporate ownership. As a result, the old, personalized Vegas is replaced by “Disneyland” style commercialization.
The Mafia’s Downfall
The FBI uncovers the skimming operation, leading to arrests and the end of the mob’s influence over the city.
The Theme of Greed
The ending reinforces that the characters’ greed, selfishness, and desire for control ultimately lead to their destruction.
