Goodfellas (1990) Copacabana Tracking Shot Cinematography

The three-minute Goodfellas tracking shot that takes us into the Copacabana nightclub and proves Henry Hill’s gangster credentials is one of the most beloved continuous shots in cinema. It has inspired similar sequences in everything from Boogie Nights to True Detective. Additionally, it inspired a sequence in Scorsese’s own The Irishman.

Key Elements of Cinematography

The Technique

It is a single, uninterrupted Steadicam take, chosen over editing to create a feeling of unhindered access and “power”.

Logistics and Chaos

Because the production could not use the main entrance of the real Copacabana club, they used the back entrance. Furthermore, they created the “long route” through the kitchen to heighten the sense of privilege.

Lighting

The team used fast lenses and careful lighting to transition from the dark street, through the bright kitchen, and into the dimly lit club.

The Climax

The shot ends with a smooth pan to comedian Henny Youngman, closing the journey.
